Kirk Cousins holds a dominant edge in the Raiders' quarterback competition heading into the 2026 regular season opener, driven by his veteran experience, established rapport with head coach Klint Kubiak from their prior time together in Minnesota, and consistent first-team reps throughout training camp and the preseason. The 15-year pro has led the offense in practices and limited game action while the team prioritizes a measured development plan for No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza, who remains the clear backup. Aidan O'Connell sits third on the unofficial depth chart. This setup aligns with official comments framing the role as Cousins' "job to lose" and preseason depth chart placements. An injury to Cousins or an unforeseen late surge by Mendoza could shift the outcome before Week 1 against the Dolphins, though current indications strongly favor the veteran.
