The 2026–27 Ligue 2 campaign opened with a crowded field of former Ligue 1 sides—AS Saint-Étienne, Stade de Reims, Montpellier HSC, FC Nantes, and FC Metz—each backed by superior budgets, recent top-flight experience, and targeted summer recruitment. Saint-Étienne’s early three-match winning streak, including convincing victories over Sochaux, Clermont, and Grenoble, has reinforced its status as an early frontrunner, yet Reims and Montpellier have also shown organized starts consistent with their squad depth. With only two automatic promotion spots and a play-off structure that rewards consistency over 34 rounds, the combination of roster parity, injury risks, and fixture congestion keeps the title race wide open. Trader consensus reflects this balance, pricing multiple clubs within a narrow band as realistic title contenders.
