The 10-year JGB yield, recently trading near 2.93%, reflects market-implied odds heavily favoring levels at or above 3.0% by end-2026. Primary drivers include the Bank of Japan's accelerated normalization, with the policy rate at 1% post-June and an 80-87% probability priced for a September lift to 1.25% amid Tokyo core CPI reaching 1.8% year-over-year and underlying measures at 2.0%. Persistent upside inflation risks from yen weakness, wage-price dynamics, and energy costs support a higher terminal rate path toward 1.5% or beyond. Fiscal concerns over Prime Minister Takaichi's consumption tax cuts, projected to widen deficits by trillions of yen, have elevated term premiums and debt-servicing worries, sustaining yield pressure despite BOJ balance-sheet adjustments. Upcoming September data and the BOJ meeting remain key near-term catalysts.
