Marine Le Pen formally declared her 2027 candidacy in July 2026 after an appeals court reduced her ineligibility period in the European Parliament assistants case, though she still faces a final Cassation Court appeal. Édouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal remain the leading centrist contenders, while Bruno Retailleau secured Les Républicains’ backing and Raphaël Glucksmann entered the Socialist primary in late August. Jean-Luc Mélenchon has gained ground in recent Ifop and Harris polls, reaching 16–19 percent in multiple scenarios and qualifying for a potential runoff against Le Pen in several tests. The first round is scheduled for April 18, 2027, with a crowded field and left primary set for October 2026; persistent centrist fragmentation continues to shape first-round dynamics ahead of the two-round system.
