Daily commodity transits through Bab el-Mandeb have fallen sharply to levels often in the teens or lower on some days, with tanker activity down 39% or more post-blockade, though overall vessel counts remain higher due to exemptions for certain Chinese and non-Saudi cargoes plus continued use of dark transits. Attacks have persisted into August, including incidents causing casualties, while Houthi statements emphasize limits on Saudi traffic rather than total closure and the Yemeni government has warned of potential land seizures to tighten control. These developments sustain elevated risk premiums and Cape of Good Hope diversions but have not produced the sustained sub-10 daily average needed for market resolution, keeping trader consensus on near-term effective closure low. Upcoming factors include any escalation tied to Iran-related diplomacy or Saudi responses.
