Recent polling shows Chris Hipkins narrowly ahead of Christopher Luxon in preferred prime minister rankings, reflecting Labour’s modest party-vote edge and the governing coalition’s declining support ahead of the November 7 election. National’s internal leadership tensions, including a failed challenge to Luxon and subsequent ministerial changes, have weighed on the prime minister’s ratings while highlighting coalition strains with ACT and New Zealand First. The rise of the Opportunity Party to around the 5% threshold introduces kingmaker dynamics that could fragment both major blocs and complicate government formation under MMP. Both leaders have seen approval drops amid debates over tax policy, cost-of-living measures, and legislative priorities, leaving the race sensitive to late shifts in minor-party support or voter turnout.
