Arman Tsarukyan entered UFC 331's five-round lightweight co-main event as the clear top contender at 155 pounds, seeking an emphatic finish to strengthen his case for a title shot against champion Justin Gaethje after withdrawing from a prior opportunity in January 2025. Mauricio Ruffy arrived on strong momentum with back-to-back knockouts but faced a significant stylistic test against Tsarukyan's elite wrestling and clinch work. Pre-fight developments included the matchup replacing a planned Tsarukyan rematch with Charles Oliveira, Ruffy's ranking rise, and ongoing questions around Tsarukyan's past issues with UFC leadership. Announcers were expected to highlight the title implications, Tsarukyan's recent grappling activity, Ruffy's striking power, and any early damage or control time that could shift the narrative in real time.
