India’s CPI inflation has climbed steadily through mid-2026, reaching 4.45% year-over-year in July from 4.38% in June, driven primarily by supply-side pressures in food (5.52%) and energy amid Middle East geopolitical tensions and rupee depreciation. The Reserve Bank of India’s August 2026 projection of 5.0% for FY2026-27, with quarterly peaks near 5.9%, reinforces trader expectations that the full-year 2026 average will exceed 4.50%. Core inflation remains contained near 3.9%, limiting broader pass-through, while the RBI has held the repo rate at 5.25% pending clearer signals on persistence. Upcoming August and September CPI releases, alongside monsoon outcomes and global oil volatility, represent the main near-term catalysts that could influence these market-implied probabilities.
