The U.S. Embassy in Damascus has remained closed since 2012 amid the Syrian civil war, with diplomatic relations frozen until the Assad regime's ouster in December 2024. Under the Trump administration, key steps toward reopening include special envoy Tom Barrack raising the U.S. flag at the compound in May 2025 and a February 2026 congressional notification outlining a phased resumption of operations. The most recent catalyst came on August 24-25, 2026, when Secretary of State Marco Rubio formally rescinded Syria's state sponsor of terrorism designation—following a 45-day review—and waived related sanctions, actions that clear legal and financial barriers to full diplomatic engagement. These moves align with broader U.S. efforts to support reconstruction under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, though security assessments, staffing levels, and congressional funding continue to shape timelines. No firm reopening date has been set, and developments such as the ongoing Damascus International Fair or further sanctions relief could influence momentum.
