Iran’s government has repeatedly deployed nationwide internet restrictions to limit communication during periods of unrest and conflict, including a record 88-day near-total blackout from January 8 to late May 2026 triggered by economic protests and sustained through U.S.-Israeli strikes beginning February 28. Partial connectivity resumed in late May under presidential directive despite security agency resistance, yet traffic levels remain well below pre-shutdown baselines with persistent platform blocks, slow speeds, and tiered access favoring select users. As of August 2026, monitoring data show continued fragmentation rather than full restoration, while economic damage from prior shutdowns and risks of renewed protests or escalation remain key variables that could prompt authorities to reimpose stricter controls.
