Abiy Ahmed’s commanding position in the market stems from his Prosperity Party’s landslide victory in the June 2026 parliamentary elections, securing 438 of 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives. Under Ethiopia’s system, the newly elected legislature selects the prime minister, and the party’s supermajority positions Abiy for formal reappointment when parliament convenes later in 2026. Trader consensus aligns with this structural advantage, as opposition parties remain fragmented and polling was suspended in conflict-affected areas including Tigray. Potential shifts could arise from intensified insurgencies in Amhara or Oromia, internal party realignments, or external pressures, though no immediate developments have altered the current parliamentary arithmetic.
