President Prabowo Subianto’s September 2025 UN General Assembly remarks acknowledged Israel’s security needs while reaffirming Palestinian support, signaling modest rhetorical flexibility. Quiet trade, security contacts, and indirect coordination persist, including through the Board of Peace framework tied to Gaza arrangements, yet direct engagement remains limited. A May 2026 flotilla incident involving detained Indonesian activists required third-party mediation rather than bilateral channels. Indonesia joined August 2026 multilateral condemnations of Israeli settlement activity. Broader catalysts such as U.S.-Indonesia trade alignment, OECD accession prospects, and potential Saudi normalization could influence timelines, though domestic political constraints and Gaza-related tensions continue to shape the pace of any diplomatic shift.
