The upcoming September 27, 2026, renewal of 178 Senate seats features 30 held by the Socialiste, Écologiste et Républicain (SER) group, which currently holds 64 total amid a Republican-led majority of 131. Trader probabilities cluster around modest net change because the indirect vote by roughly 93,000 grands électeurs—predominantly municipal delegates chosen after the March 2026 local elections—depends on localized alliances and turnout among centrist and left-leaning councilors. Left parties have pursued joint candidacies to defend or expand SER holdings and retain second-place status ahead of the Union Centriste (59 seats), yet departmental negotiations remain incomplete and some contests use majoritarian rules that reward cohesive lists. Recent polling of the electoral college and candidate filings show no decisive national swing, leaving outcomes sensitive to a handful of competitive departments where fragmentation or unified slates could shift SER totals by several seats in either direction.
