This market will resolve to “Yes” if the United States expels a Brazilian diplomat stationed in the United States between market creation and September 30, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. For the purposes of this market, “expel” refers to a formal action by the United States requiring the Brazilian diplomat to leave the United States, including a declaration of persona non grata. Revocation of a diplomat’s visa or denial of entry to the United States will not alone suffice. An announcement of a qualifying expulsion will suffice for a “Yes” resolution, regardless of whether the relevant diplomat actually leaves the country. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the United States government; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.**Trader consensus against a US expulsion of a Brazilian diplomat by September 30 reflects the distinction between recent visa actions and formal expulsion, alongside ongoing diplomatic channels.** In early August 2026 the State Department revoked Brazilian Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti’s visa as a reciprocal step tied to Brazil’s denial of visas for two US officials and delays in approving the US ambassador nominee. Officials explicitly stated this did not constitute expulsion, allowed the ambassador to remain, and could be reversed quickly if Brazil grants agrément. Bilateral tensions—centered on US tariffs, election-related disputes ahead of Brazil’s October vote, and mutual visa measures—have not escalated to declaring diplomats persona non grata. A cordial August 21 phone call between Presidents Lula and Trump has instead led to scheduled virtual trade talks on August 31, indicating both sides prefer negotiation over further rupture. Expulsion remains a high-threshold action typically reserved for espionage or grave incidents not present here. While additional US measures stay possible if approval for the nominee stalls or new frictions emerge before the deadline, the short window and current de-escalatory signals support the strong market view that no expulsion will occur.
