**US-Canada trade tensions dominate recent bilateral contact.** As Prime Minister, Mark Carney has held multiple direct calls with President Trump in 2026, including discussions on NATO, Arctic security, Iran, and ongoing CUSMA/USMCA-related negotiations. August saw at least two calls tied to threatened 50% US tariffs on Canadian goods, with Trump describing one exchange as positive before Canada suspended talks on August 22 over last-minute US demands on autos, cultural provisions, and trade policy. Carney has signaled willingness to resume only under a partnership approach, while both sides have imposed or threatened retaliatory tariffs. Trader sentiment on any near-term call market reflects these high-stakes economic disputes, scheduled deadlines such as tariff implementation dates, and the pattern of leader-level engagement during crises rather than routine diplomacy.
