Trader consensus for no change at the Bank of Canada’s September 2, 2026, meeting reflects the 2.25% overnight rate remaining near neutral, as the July Monetary Policy Report projected headline CPI easing gradually toward the 2% target despite a July 2026 reading of 3.0% year-over-year, driven primarily by gasoline prices. Core measures excluding energy stayed near 2%, with inflation expectations well anchored and excess supply persisting in the labor market. Recent Reuters polling of economists uniformly anticipates a hold through year-end amid trade uncertainties, aligning with market-implied odds and the July decision to maintain policy. A material upside surprise in underlying inflation or sharper deterioration in growth could still prompt a reassessment before the announcement.

Increases or decreases of less than 25 bps will be rounded to 25 bps (e.g. an increase or decrease of 10 bps would be considered to be an increase or decrease of 25 bps). Increases or decreases of greater than 25 bps will be rounded to the nearest 25 bps and will be rounded away from 0 in cases of equidistance (e.g., an increase or decrease of 37.5 bps would be considered to be an increase or decrease of 50 bps). Displayed options of “Increase” or “Decrease” will include policy rate increases or decreases of any size.
If the specified announcement is postponed to a date and time before the start of the next scheduled announcement, this market will resolve based on the outcome of that postponed announcement.
