Recent energy price surges from Middle East supply disruptions and elevated gasoline costs have lifted headline CPI expectations for September 2026, with August's 3.4% annual rate holding steady amid 0.4% monthly gains. Cleveland Fed nowcasts point to 3.43%, while trader-implied odds cluster tightly around 3.5% (33%) and 3.6% (31.5%), reflecting uncertainty over how much the energy spike will persist versus base effects and cooling core measures at 2.4%. Rising consumer inflation expectations to 4.6% and resilient shelter costs add upward pressure, though moderating food inflation and potential demand shifts from AI-driven sectors introduce offsetting dynamics ahead of the mid-October release.
