Abiy Ahmed’s commanding position stems from his Prosperity Party’s decisive June 2026 parliamentary election victory, which delivered roughly 438 of 501 contested seats and a clear mandate to form the next government. Parliament selects the prime minister, so the ruling party’s supermajority effectively locks in continuity when the new legislature convenes later this year. Ongoing insurgencies in Amhara and Oromia, plus unresolved issues in Tigray, create persistent security risks that could pressure the administration, yet they have not disrupted the party’s institutional grip. A realistic shift would require either a sudden internal party realignment, a major escalation forcing political concessions, or an unforeseen leadership transition before the next electoral cycle.
