Abiy Ahmed holds a commanding position in Ethiopia’s prime ministerial succession market due to his Prosperity Party’s landslide victory in the June 2026 parliamentary elections, securing roughly 90 percent of contested seats despite limited opposition participation and voting disruptions in Tigray and parts of Amhara. Under Ethiopia’s parliamentary system, the legislature selects the prime minister, positioning Abiy for formal reappointment during the new term beginning in October. His consolidated control within the ruling party, combined with a fragmented opposition, underpins trader consensus on continuity. Potential shifts remain possible through acute security escalations in restive regions, major health events, or unforeseen institutional changes, though none currently register as near-term threats in available reporting.
