The preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index for August 2026 printed at 51.0, down 4.2 points from July’s final 55.2 and below economist expectations near 54.5, anchoring the 49.0–51.9 bracket with a 69.5% market-implied probability ahead of the August 28 final release. The decline reflected broad weakening in both current conditions (to 51.8) and expectations (to 50.6) components, driven by sharper pessimism on short- and long-term business conditions, slightly higher one-year inflation expectations at 4.3%, and ongoing cost-of-living pressures tied to energy prices following Middle East developments. Reductions were most pronounced among older, lower-income, and less-educated households, with only 8% of respondents expecting income growth to outpace inflation. Final readings historically show limited revisions from the preliminary print, supporting the strong trader consensus around the observed level while leaving modest room for adjustment on the August 28 data.
