OpenAI’s GPT Image 2 (ChatGPT Images 2.0) leads most independent text-to-image arenas as of late August 2026, with top Elo scores on complex prompts, text rendering across scripts, and overall preference rankings after its April release. Traders assign it a 71.5% chance of holding the strongest model by end of October due to its native reasoning mode, character consistency, and massive weekly usage that accelerates iteration. Google’s Nano Banana variants remain close behind on editing and free-tier consistency, while Microsoft’s MAI-Image 2.6 has shown recent benchmark gains in commercial and editing tasks. Specialists like Ideogram (typography) and Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.2 (photorealism, open weights) trail in overall preference but could close gaps with targeted updates. FLUX 3’s multimodal shift toward video has not yet delivered a new image leader, and no other lab has announced a release that would overtake OpenAI’s current edge before the October cutoff.
