The November 2026 South African local government elections have left Mangaung’s mayoral race open, with the ANC’s recent shortlist of eight candidates—including incumbent Gregory Nthatisi, former mayor Thabo Manyoni, and several others—highlighting internal party divisions rather than a unified nominee. This approach, announced in late August, contrasts with the DA’s early selection of Werner Pretorius and the EFF’s naming of Sam Matiase, leaving trader consensus evenly split across multiple outcomes. Persistent service delivery challenges, audit irregularities, and governance concerns under the current administration continue to shape assessments of viability. The market’s tight distribution reflects uncertainty over which ANC contender will ultimately prevail and how opposition parties will perform in a metro long held by the ANC.
