On August 28, 2026, the United States and Venezuela announced an oil deal granting the United States access to Venezuela's crude oil reserves. This market will resolve to "Yes" if any amount of Venezuelan oil acquired under this agreement is deposited into the United States Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) by the specified date, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". A qualifying deposit must be confirmed to have been received at a US SPR storage facility and to have been sourced from Venezuela under the referenced agreement or a successor US-Venezuela oil deal. Announcements of plans or intentions to deposit Venezuelan oil into the SPR will not qualify. The deposit must be confirmed by the specified date, 11:59 PM ET. The resolution sources for this market will be official information from the government of the United States and a consensus of credible reporting. The Trump administration’s late-August 2026 deal granting U.S. interests a controlling stake in 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan reserves, paired with President Trump’s statement that Venezuelan crude would replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, forms the central driver of trader sentiment. The SPR stood at roughly 290 million barrels as of late August—near a 44-year low and about 40 percent of authorized capacity—after releases tied to the Iran conflict. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has clarified that direct storage is unlikely due to Venezuelan heavy crude’s high sulfur and density, which mismatch SPR cavern specifications; instead, a swap mechanism would route Venezuelan barrels to Gulf Coast refineries in exchange for lighter domestic grades. Venezuela’s output of approximately 1.25 million barrels per day limits near-term volumes, and analysts note that meaningful refilling could require years of production growth and infrastructure investment. Key near-term catalysts include any acceleration in field development under the North American Blue Energy Partners partnership or further administration guidance on swap execution.
